Hypnotherapy for Children
Children are amazing! That’s why as parents it is so soul destroying when you see your child suffering with something and feel helpless, because as a parent, all you want to do is ease their pain. Sometimes taking that first step and taking outside help can help you to feel better as a parent.
Our hypnotherapist Heather, is very experienced with dealing with children. She has her own little boy with his own special needs so she has a wide breadth of professional and personal experience of dealing with conditions specific to children. Heather has undergone additional training for working with children with some of the UK’s leading Paediatric Hypnotherapists, including Lynda Hudson (Author and Leading Hypnotherapist). She holds a Full Disclosure certificate for working with children and vulnerable adults and she is one of only a handful of Senior Hypnotherapists and Supervisors for the NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapy), working in Scotland.
The good news is that hypnotherapy is very effective with children from the ages of 7-15 as children have a great imagination and so it is easy to engage them into the hypnotic world of storytelling and imagery, which our subconscious minds love.
Some of the conditions specific to children that our hypnotherapist can help with are:
- Habit and tic disorders including thumb-sucking
- Trichotillomania (hair-pulling)
- Nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting)
- Encopresis (Pooing issues)
- Sleep terrors
- Nightmares, and other sleep disturbances
- Swallowing problems
- Selective eating/fussy eating
- School Phobia
- Anxiety and stress
- Depression and low mood
- Confidence building
- Obsessive Thoughts and Compulsions
- Nail biting
- Bullying
- Anger
- Fears and phobias
- Exam nerves
- School transitioning
How does the process work?
Our hypnotherapist likes to have a good chat with the child’s parent first either by phone or face to face without the child present. During this time she will gather some background information of the problem. She may gather some basic health information at this time too and some general background history of the nature of the issue. She will then meet you both at her clinic in Polmont or Livingston. Once the child is in the room your child becomes the client and Heather will direct all questions to the child and engage with the child (that is why she likes to meet parents beforehand to get their take on the situation and gain valuable background information). During the first session with your child, Heather will be building up a picture of their likes and dislikes for use in later sessions. She will then (if possible) do a live recording of the session and get your child help her burn to CD so that they feel part of the process and can have their special CD to listen to at home between sessions.
A parent will always be in the room throughout the session. Occasionally for slightly older children (14-15 year olds) and with parent and child’s permission the parent can sit outside in reception. However, in all cases Heather insists that a parent stays on the premises.
Sessions for children are kept much shorter than with adults and are adapted in line with the child’s age and attention span. However as a general rule the 1st session with your child present will be around 1 hour and subsequent sessions will be between 20-40 minutes. As such the charging structure for working with children 15 and under is £80 for the 1st session and £60 for subsequent sessions.
